We reached out to one of our world-upside-down-turners recently – Amanda*, our missionary in a Muslim Asian country, who is seeing Disciple-making Movements emerge around her. Amanda and her husband were trained at ANKC about 10 years ago.
She told us this God-story that was so encouraging and displays values we hold at All Nations. These are:
- Every believer plays a part
- Go where there is need
- Disciple through (multiply)
- Take risks
Dreams of Jesus
Khadija*, a local Muslim woman, began having dreams of Jesus about a year ago. This happened every other week for a few months, and in every dream, He was wearing all white and glowing with light, and speaking words of peace and to Khadija. He told her specifically: “I am Yesuus.”
Khadija thought, I better find a Jesus-Follower to ask about this! But she was frightened because her family was very anti-Christian. They were suspicious towards any non-Muslims. She met a few Christians who had no idea how to help her – then she found a woman named Sundari* – a local believer who was discipled and trained by Amanda, our ANKC missionary. Khadija told Sundari about the Jesus dreams she had been having. Sundari and another believer shared the Gospel with Khadija, and Khadija decided to follow Jesus with her whole life!
Encountering Challenges
But Khadija had a lot of challenges. First, she had cancer and was undergoing chemotherapy. Then, before her treatment was over, she found out she was pregnant. She was so scared that the chemo would hurt the baby. Sundari taught her to pray boldly to Jesus for a miracle.
Sundari was continuing to disciple Khadija using the Bible and Whatsapp. Sundari is one of Amanda’s disciples, and had learned from Amanda that in order for the Gospel to multiply in family networks, it is better NOT to extract a new believer from their context. This also prevents unnecessary persecution. So Sundari told Khadija, “We know you follow Jesus now and pray to Him alone. Keep doing that, but don’t officially change your religion on your identity card. Remain in your family and share with them your faith by your words and actions.” Khadija agreed. She remained in her family, praying to Jesus for healing, and being discipled by Sundari secretly.
Miracles
A few weeks later, Khadija had another dream. In the dream she saw Jesus standing by a tree full of fruit. Jesus asked her, “What would you like from Me?” Khadija replied, through tears, “I want to see my babies grow up!” Jesus smiled, picked a piece of fruit from the tree, handed it to her, and she ate it. As she ate it, warmth spread throughout her body.
The next morning, Khadija had an appointment with her oncologist. He did his usual blood test, and was surprised by the results. Thinking there was an equipment malfunction, he ran the test again, twice more. Sure enough, he could not find cancer!
Today, Khadija is still cancer-free and the mother of a brand new healthy baby boy. Khadija’s husband, who was previously very anti-Christian, has been softened by the love of the Christians who have befriended his wife. This family is being turned upside down in the most beautiful way!
Value-Driven Living
Here we see the first value – EVERY believer plays a part. Jesus used Amanda, a missionary but also a mom of three, Sundari a local woman with 4 kids, and Khadija, a brand new believer!
We also see the second value in this story – Go where there is a need. Amanda moved to a country with many unreached Muslims who needed to know about following Jesus. Sundari was bold to respond to Khadija, when she expressed a need to understand her dreams, and a need for healing.
Then, we see the third value. What does disciple through mean, anyway? Well, often we focus on discipling AT people. We share spiritual knowledge at one person or one group, and it stops there. This isn’t inherently bad, but its really a waste, strategically. We want to be intentional to always help the person we are discipling to pass it on! In this story, Amanda, an ANKC missionary, trained Sundari in discipleship. Then God used Sundari to disciple Khadija to boldly share her faith in the face or persecution. Now God is using Khadija to reach her husband!
Finally, Amanda, Sundari and Khadija all took risks. Amanda moved to a hard place in the world. Sundari reached out to disciple a Muslim, even when she had to do it secretly. And Khadija remained in her family network, at great risk to herself, in order to be able to boldly share her faith with them!
